Loading... Please wait...If you want to reduce the running temp of your V8 gas engine, you should consider replacing the stock thermostat with the TD5 version (a direct replacement). Average temperature reductions have been reported as going from 224 down to 190 degrees farenheit. The overheat light comes on at around 260 or 264 degrees.
The two caveats when doing this mod are:
A- If your emissions are borderline it could put you into "fail" when it comes to CA smog or other emission controlled states or counties. This was one reason why they run the motor hot.
B- Your gas mileage (mpg) may decrease, possibly by as much as 5 or 10%. That is quite considerable.
If your cooling system is in good order and has a 50% anti-freeze mix then the higher operating temperate should be no problem, but as we all know, as radiators get a little less efficient, or in extreme heat, or when you have a borderline slipped liner, or aging head gasket, this may be a cheaper solution than an overhaul.
We just want people to know that it isn't a magic cure.
