2-Position Heavy Duty Rear Shock Absorber (damper) Mounts (pair)
[Note: 3-position is pictured for reference only]
These Rear Shock Mounts can use a much longer travel shock (11" or more), pin to pin fitting (not the standard pin to eye). This allows the same shocks to be used front and rear on Discovery 1, RRC and Defender 90. Ride stiffness can be altered by attaching the shock into position 1 or 2. Stiffer ride is obtained with the damper in a more upright position.
Note that on some Defender models the fuel filter may need to be relocated, and some minor trimming carried out, to allow the use of all three positions.
Using a pin-style top mount allows more movement in all directions. The problem with the standard eye-type top mount is that it can move front to back, but not sideways. Sideways movement is restricted and ths can cause the eye to break off during extreme articulation, when longer shocks are fitted. The rear shock mounts are moved forward and upwards to allow room for the longer shock length, this allows the spring to compress on full upward travel. Upward travel is important as you want your wheel to move upwards to get over obstacles, but this mount also allows a lot of downward movement as well, keeping your wheels on the ground at all times which helps traction and takes additional stress off the drive train.
On newer rear axles you will have four shock bush cup washers on the axle shock mount. You must remove these four cup washers as they will restrict the shock movement and can cause the shock lower pin to break off. They are held on with four spot welds and must be removed, This is very important.
